The Interpretation Centre on the Battle of Aljubarrota, opened doors during October of this year. The recovery and valorisation of the Military Camp of S. Jorge began in 2002 and the key element in order to safeguard this patrimony would be the construction of an Interpretation Centre, which in a rigorous and instructive manner, could describe the different aspects of the Battle of Aljubarrota.
The Interpretation Centre provided a new functional space, with greater capacity and better conditions to receive visitors. The centre has a floor area covering 1.908m2, divided into the following main areas:
- Exhibit area with 900m2, divided in sections, dedicated to the Battle of Aljubarrota and the period in which it took place;
- Educational services with 1.500m2 (interior and exterior areas), which include the activities of the workshops;
- Temporary exhibit area
- Restaurant area
This Interpretation Centre was also conceived to create an ever greater connection, with the surrounding landscape and plans have been made to gradually recover it as close as possible to what it was like in 1385. Therefore, the visitors will have the opportunity to visit the Battlefield of Aljubarrota, becoming familiar with the places where the most important facts took place during the Battle.
An integrated visit will be made in which visitors can get to know and observe the Interpretation Centre as well as the battlefield that surrounds it. This will allow a more complete visit to the Military Camp of S. Jorge therefore certainly more appealing.
