The hiking trail Rota dos Moinhos (Trail of the Mills) starts next to the elementary school of Crespos, near the north entrance of the Sensory Ecopark of Pia do Urso. It is a trail that brings you in contact with nature and where numerous plant and animal species can be observed. Along with the fauna and flora, the route is dotted with several mills, some of which are still in operation.
We will first arrive at the Cassaca Mills, which used to transform grain into flour for the people of Pia do Urso, Crespos and Casais.
After that, we'll pass by the Zé Cuco Mill, which lay in ruins for a long time, until one of the owner's sons, who was a cereal grinder, ended up rebuilding his father's mill.
We will then come to the mill of Manuel Miller, followed by the Mocho Mill. Just in front of this, you can see the ruins of the São Mamede Chapel.
Continuing along the same path used by pilgrims in the 16th century, we will bump into the Carreiro Lajes. From this point, we will find the Murrial and its mills, whose construction dates are not known. Out of a total of ten mills, only two now remain.
Once you arrive at Little Castle Mill comes the Pia do Urso Sensory Ecopark, the first set-up in the country entirely geared towards providing an experience of the surrounding environment for those with visual impairments. It's a magical place that warrants a thorough visit.
